What Is Implant Dentistry

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth.

Virtually all dental implants placed today are root-form endosseous implants. In other words, virtually all dental implants placed in the 21st century appear similar to an actual tooth root (and thus possess a "root-form") and are placed within the bone (end- being the Greek prefix for "in" and osseous referring to "bone").

Prior to the advent of root-form endosseous implants, most implants were either blade endosseous implants, in that the shape of the metal piece placed within the bone resembled a flat blade, or subperiosteal implants, in which a framework was constructed to lie upon and was attached with screws to the exposed bone of the jaws.

Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, implant-supported bridges or dentures.

Dental Implants - What You Need to Know

Dental implants are artificial replacements designed to fully replace lost teeth both functionally and in appearance. Dental implants are very durable and have a long-lasting life. Once installed properly, they last for at least 10 to 15 years or even more depending on the aftercare that is taken. Implants can be little costly and so may not be easily affordable for everyone. Insurance companies also do not provide coverage for implants as these are considered cosmetic procedures. However, they are a very good option because even though they're costly they have a long life and provide effective results.

There are different types of implants. The most popular implants today are made from titanium. Titanium is used because it has a number of advantages. First and foremost, it is biocompatible. Secondly, it is very durable and has a long-lasting life. Thirdly, it is highly resistant to corrosion. In other words, it doesn't rust. Because of these advantages, titanium is the ideal material of choice for making dental implants.

Titanium implants are very stable because of the phenomena known as Osseointegration, which was discovered by a Swedish physicist in the 1960s. When titanium is implanted into the bone, the cells of the bone fuse with the titanium and grow into it. As a result, the titanium implant is very stable and the chances of rejection are very low. There are other types of implants known as fibro integrated implants. However, these are not popular today because they're not as advantageous as titanium implants.

Dental implants are implanted by surgery under anesthesia. The first step, the titanium screw is implanted into the jawbone. Next, stitches are made to the surrounding gum to prevent bleeding and to make the healing process faster. Once the gum line heals fully, the crown is built over the titanium implant. The crown is constructed from porcelain or composite materials. It is built in such a way that it matches closely with the surrounding teeth.

Dental implants are costly and usually range in between of $2000-$8000. However, they're worth the investment because they're very effective and have a long life.
